The hearing aids of the past frustrated not only the person who was wearing the device, but usually those who were speaking to the person as well. Words always needed to be repeated, the hearing aids themselves were big and always needed to be adjusted; and if you ever got too close to the person you could hear the “buzzing- coming from the hearing aid itself.

An impairment or functional limitation can become a disability if it affects the quality of your life or your ability to function in a normal society. So being deaf or having a hearing impairment would not be a disability if you are surrounded by those who accept and support you and you take special care to not allow it to dampen your quality of life.
